Crawfordsville High School’s Winter Guard are now state champions for the second year in a row. They got a score of 81.0 following state competition at Decatur Central High School Saturday. The team competed against 16 schools that were part of Regional A in the Hayes Division. This year’s score is a new personal record for the high school. Their program was titled “Sunset”.
“We were one of the smaller groups, with about 9 performers. You have all eyes on you all the time, and you have got to be perfect; otherwise, you’re going to be caught messing up”, said Crawfordsville Band & Guard Director Jon Tebbe. “Having enough coaching staff to delegate things has helped us out in the long run”.
“Everybody’s role in the guard is to perform the best you can”, said Li Li Yeung, a senior and fellow member of the winter guard. “This year, I was in the forefront tossing rifle, so it was really different for me since I’ve only done flag before”. Yeung has been in color guard for four years and band for seven years. She plays clarinet for concert and marching band, as well as trombone for jazz band.
“Before I joined guard, one of the girls on the team asked me to join a practice, and I fell in love with the group. The team is like a family to me”, said Jaylynn Wilson, another senior and member of the winter guard. She has been part of color guard for four years, and band for seven years. Her primary instrument is clarinet.
