Soil & Water Conservation District to host learning circle for woodland management

The Montgomery County Soil & Water Conservation District (MCSWCD) is organizing a learning circle session in partnership with Women 4 The Land.

This learning circle will focus on forestry and woodland management. Guest speakers will discuss invasive species control, the importance of habitat diversity, federal programs available, among other topics. It will be held on Tuesday, May 19, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Hoosier Heartland State Bank’s Success Center. After activities and lunch, participants will travel to the Brickyard Nature Park for an in-field exploration of woodland management practices.

“Women 4 the Land is an organization that brings learning circles of various agricultural topics to communities across the state,” said Lea Dick, the conservation director for the MCSWCD. “A large portion of women landowners may have not been involved in farm management decisions or operations in the past, and some are returning to the farm and others may be beginning with little to no farming experience. [Women 4 the Land] is a space for participating women to speak about their own experiences and goals”.

2026 is celebrated as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, which is globally recognized by the United Nations. According to the American Farmland Trust, 43% of U.S. farmland is farmed or co-farmed by women. This makes up about 388 million acres.
