This Day in History: May 29

Here’s a brief look back in time for this day, May 29.

In 1848, the territory of Wisconsin enters the Union as the 30th U.S. state. Due to Wisconsin’s proximity to the Great Lakes, it served as a vital economic hub for various goods such as furs, lead, and perhaps most prominently, dairy. When tagged alongside a population boom with incoming Irish, German, and Norwegian immigrants, it was only a matter of time before the “Badger State” became established.

In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay become the first recorded individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest. They allegedly spent a total of 15 minutes admiring the beautiful yet freezing view from the highest point on Earth. As parting gifts to the mountain, Hillary left a cross while Tenzing left a box of chocolates.
