The City of Crawfordsville announced in a press release an expansion for its Shelter-Neuter-Release (SNR) program, which is a collaborative effort with the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County. According to its statement, the City has committed $25,000 for the program in 2026.
The process involves live-trapping stray and feral cats, having them spayed or neutered, and then returning them to their original location. This is projected to help stabilize the population over time; reduce nuisance behaviors such as fighting and spraying; and improve overall animal health. The AWL will also help respond to community concerns, assess situations, implement SNR areas, and provide guidance to residents.
Live traps and carriers are available from the AWL. A fully refundable $50 deposit is required. An appointment must be made to participate in the SNR program.
“The Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County and the City of Crawfordsville are working together in taking a compassionate, proactive step towards improving the lives of community cats while reducing the growing population and creating a healthier and happier future for both the animals and people in our community,” said Abbie Horn, the shelter manager for the AWL.

For more information, or to report concerns about stray or feral cats, residents are encouraged to contact the AWL at 765-362-8846.
