Here’s a brief look back in time for this day, May 9.
In 1950, L. Ron Hubbard publishes his book titled “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health”. Hubbard initially got into the business as a science fiction writer who wrote novellas such as “The Kingslayer” and “Battlefield: Earth”. What got Dianetics into the spotlight were its unproven studies into psychoanalysis. The book would set the foundational scripture for what’s known today as Scientology.
In 1969, the New York Times publishes an article revealing the once-covert operation called “Operation Menu”. The mission involved stealth bombing on the eastern portion of Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Its author, William M. Beecher, was later subjected to wiretapping from the Nixon administration with the help of J. Edgar Hoover. It is unknown how many casualties were sustained, particularly civilians.
